March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), and this year’s campaign—We're Here All Year—emphasizes that community, accessibility, and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities should be recognized and championed every day—not just in March.
Frazer Center works all year with each adult participant who chooses to come to us for support. That support might be helping an individual discover their gifts and fulfill their dream of finding employment. Support might come in the form of creating opportunities for participants to meaningfully engage with the community through cultural, educational, recreational, volunteer, or social outings.
Regardless, Frazer Center champions individuals with developmental disabilities—this month and every month—as valuable members of our communities, deserving full participation in all aspects of life, including education, employment, recreation, and civic engagement.
Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of fostering a society where people with disabilities are empowered to contribute to their communities. While March provides an opportunity for heightened awareness, true awareness happens when we commit to creating accessible environments and productive opportunities year-round.
“Individuals with developmental disabilities are integral members of our communities—they are our neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family,” says DeAnna Julian, CEO of Frazer Center. “Their unique talents, perspectives, and contributions enhance the richness and diversity of our shared lives. At Frazer, we invite and encourage our metro-Atlanta neighbors to join us in fostering communities that are not only inclusive, but where everyone is empowered to thrive.”
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) supports policy change and programs that promote self-determination, integration, and involvement in everyday life for all people in the United States with intellectual and developmental disabilities. "Through the We're Here All Year campaign, we want to share that people with developmental disabilities are working, going to school, volunteering, and participating in their community—just like all of us,” says Jill Jacobs, NACDD Executive Director. “When they are engaged and involved in their local community, it is a win-win for everyone.”
