Ernest has a mellifluous belly laugh. He loves listening to “old-school” music like the Temptations, he loves his Atlanta Falcons, and he also loves to travel. He’s been to such places as the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico. But Ernest hasn’t always had such amazing opportunities.
Three years ago, he moved into a residential group home. He was 48 at the time, and it was his first experience living independently. Yes, he depends on support staff that helps him get to where he needs to go, but he gets to make those decisions for himself. He gets to decide how he wants to spend his time and his money. The staff at his home has made it possible for Ernest to travel with his roommates and other adults they serve.
Sandra Reese, Frazer Center’s Community Inclusion Coordinator, was on staff when Ernest first started coming to the Frazer Center over twenty years ago. When a family death led to an unfavorable living situation for Ernest, the Frazer Center staff worked with him to find his new home. Sandra has witnessed how much Ernest has come out of his shell since he started living independently. “He was able to express himself and do more things. His self-esteem grew.” He has even since found a girlfriend. Meshelle also participates in the Frazer Center Adult Program, and they enjoy going on community outings together.
You can help Ernest, Meshelle, and the almost 100 other adults with disabilities in our program live their greatest lives by remembering the Frazer Center on GA Gives on Giving Tuesday, November 28th. Beginning November 1st, you can even schedule a donation for the 28th. To borrow one of Ernest’s favorite Falcons mantras: “RISE UP!” Any amount is helpful and greatly appreciated.
