The 2025 City Nature Challenge results are in!
For the 10th year in a row, the City Nature Challenge has brought the world together in the name of biodiversity and ecological research. In this friendly competition, citizen scientists from around the world get outside, observe the species around them, photograph them, and upload them to the iNaturalist app.
THIS YEAR’S RESULTS:
Total # of observations: 3,310,131
- Total # of observers: 102,945
- Total # of species documented: 73,765+, including more than 3,338 rare/endangered/threatened species
- Most observed species: Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), with 8,617 observations
- Number of participating countries: 62

Team ATL, led locally by Fernbank Museum, surpassed its goal of 10,000 observations with 14,559 observations of 2,382 species—the most ever for Atlanta.
Contributing to those numbers were some of Frazer Center’s little ones who ventured out to our forested campus to point out as many species as they could see while teachers photographed their observations.
In its 10-year history, the City Nature Challenge has generated more than 12,000,000 observations worldwide.
- Observations: 12,948,135
- Species: 113,320
- People: 363,723
- Most Observed: Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
- Rare, endangered, or threatened species: 7,138
Mark your calendar for next year's 11th City Nature Challenge, happening April 24-27, 2026.
